Prosecutor to probe Turkish opposition bugging claims

ANKARA - The Ankara prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into claims by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) that state officials bugged the office of one of its senior officials.

Late on Wednesday, the prosecutor’s office announced it would be investigating the allegations made by CHP leader Deniz Baykal and other party officials.

The allegations arose after a newspaper on Monday printed details from a conversation between Onder Sav, the CHP’s secretary general, and a provincial governor.

Baykal told a press conference Wednesday that state organizations were bugging the offices of opposition parties and undermining democracy and the rights of the country’s citizens.
