Turk has been succeeded as DTP parliamentary group leader by Emine Ayna, a DTP deputy from the south eastern province of Mardin. Ayna had previously been acting as the DTP’s chairperson after Nurettin Demirtas, the former chairman, was ordered to complete his compulsory military service and forced to resign.
Turk had previously flagged that he would stand down as group chairman, telling a DP meeting in early May that it had been decided to end his mission.
Turk also said that during a meeting of DTP on May 7th-8th, his mission as group chairman was decided to be ended, and that’s why he vacated his post now.
Though having stepped aside as group chairman, Turk said it was possible he might run for the position of party chairman and that this would be be discussed at a later date.
