European Parliament to vote on report on Turkey

The report calls on Turkey to speed up the pace of reforms and highlights a number of concerns over rights and freedoms.

STARSBOURG - The European Parliament (EP) is to debate a report on Turkey’s progress in meeting the requirements of membership of the European Union on Wednesday.

The report, prepared by Christian Democrat parliamentarian Ria Oomen-Ruijten, was approved by the EP’s Committee on Foreign Affairs in April.

Though non-binding, the report will add to the pressure being placed on the Turkish government to increase the pace of reforms needed to be enacted in order to meet the standards required for membership of the EU.

In particular, the report stresses the need for Turkey to strengthen human rights and freedoms.
